Air or Ground Source Heat Pumps - Which is the best option?

Aside from obvious differences between air and ground source heat pumps like where they absorb their energy from; there are other factors that could make your decision easier.
 

Both heat pumps are standalone units that are usually installed outside of your home or business place, although ground pumps can also be placed inside. The air source pump must be outside and is then connected to an indoor unit to emit the heat accordingly.

The pollution levels for electricity are another important factor to consider. The co2 levels are predicted to rise each year and facts show that every little helps when making the switch.

If cost is an issue then you must bear in mind that the efficiently of your new heat pump could cost more at first but in time you will reap the rewards from saving on heating bills. The reason for this is that the pumps work most efficiently at lower temperatures and therefore take longer to heat an entire home as it is more environmentally friendly. It is recommended (although not necessary) that radiators are bigger and underfloor heating is installed to take advantage of this. A general price guide sees a Ground source pump costing up to £10,000 more than a £5,000-£7,000 air source pump.

Both Ground source and Air source pumps are eligible to run through the Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI) but the amount tends to differ. When comparing the two pumps, studies show Ground source pumps can be up to 20% more efficient. The ground source pump will tend to out live the air source pump which furthers the long term benefits. Even if it needs replacing after 25 years, it is a not a high cost system therefore it is still an investment.
